Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时，佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are five faculties. What are the five? They are the faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, and the faculty of wisdom. What is the faculty of faith? If a noble disciple gives rise to pure faith in the Tathāgata's attainment of enlightenment, this is called the faculty of faith. What is the faculty of diligence? The diligent means and efforts that arise from giving rise to the mind of enlightenment in the Tathāgata, this is called the faculty of diligence. What is the faculty of mindfulness? The faculty of mindfulness that arises from first giving rise to the mind of enlightenment in the Tathāgata. What is the faculty of concentration? The samādhi that arises from first giving rise to the mind of enlightenment in the Tathāgata, this is called the faculty of concentration. What is the faculty of wisdom? The wisdom that arises from first giving rise to the mind of enlightenment in the Tathāgata, this is called the faculty of wisdom. The remaining halls and pavilions are as explained above." | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「有五根。何等为五？谓信根、精进根、念根、定根、慧根。何等为信根？若圣弟子于如来发菩提心所得净信心，是名信根。何等为精进根？于如来发菩提心所起精进方便，是名精进根。何等念根？于如来初发菩提心所起念根。何等为定根？于如来初发菩提心所起三昧，是名定根。何等为慧根？于如来初发菩提心所起智慧，是名慧根。所余堂阁，譬如上说。」 |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
