The chapter on Brahmins means that their words and deeds are pure and their philosophical studies are unstained, which can be called the way of a Daoist. | 梵志品者,言行清白,理学无秽,可称道士。 |
Crossing the stream without attachment, like a brahman, knowing that actions are exhausted, this is called a brahman.
| 截流而渡, 无欲如梵,知行已尽,是谓梵志;

Using the non-dual Dharma to purify and cross the abyss with the bonds of desires untied, this is called a brahman.

Contemplating without defilement, practicing without leakage, seeking the higher without arising, this is called a brahman.
| 思惟无垢, 所行不漏,上求不起,是谓梵志。

The sun shines during the day, the moon shines at night, armor and weapons shine on the army, meditation shines on the practitioners of the Way; when the Buddha appears in the world, he shines on all darkness.
| 日照于昼、 月照于夜、甲兵照军、 禅照道人;佛出天下,照一切冥。

Not shaving to become a śramaṇa, not calling oneself a brahman, being able to abandon all evil, that is called a practitioner of the Way;
| 非剃为沙门, 称吉为梵志,谓能舍众恶, 是则为道人;

Emerging from evil is a brahman, entering the right path is a śramaṇa, abandoning the impure practices of self, that is called leaving the household.
| 出恶为梵志, 入正为沙门,弃我众秽行, 是则为舍家。

If one relies on love, the mind is without attachment, having abandoned and corrected, this is the cessation of all suffering.

Not having matted hair is called a brahman; truly practicing the Dharma, pure and white, then one is wise.
| 非蔟结发, 名为梵志;诚行法行,清白则贤。

Adorning the hair without wisdom, what use is a grass robe? Not being free from attachment within, what benefit is there in abandoning externally?
| 饰发无慧, 草衣何施?内不离著, 外舍何益?

Wearing tattered and evil robes, personally practicing the Dharma, dwelling in seclusion and contemplating, this is called a brahman;
| 被服弊恶,躬承法行,闲居思惟, 是谓梵志;

The Buddha does not teach them to praise themselves and claim their own accomplishments. Only if it is true and not false, is it called a brahman;
| 佛不教彼, 赞己自称,如谛不妄,乃为梵志;

Cutting off all desires, not indulging in lustful thoughts abandoning the counting of desires, this is called a brahman;
| 绝诸可欲, 不婬其志,委弃欲数, 是谓梵志;

Cutting off the river of birth and death, being able to endure and cross over, awakening oneself and emerging from the moat, this is called a brahman;
| 断生死河,能忍起度,自觉出堑, 是谓梵志;

Seeing scolding and seeing beating, silently enduring without anger, having the power of patience, this is called a brahman;
| 见骂见击, 默受不怒,有忍辱力,是谓梵志;

If one sees encroachment and deception, only thinking of guarding the precepts, regulating one's body and mind, this is called a brahman;
| 若见侵欺, 但念守戒,端身自调, 是谓梵志;

Discarding evil dharmas like a snake shedding its skin, not defiled by desire, this is called a brahman;
| 心弃恶法,如蛇脱皮,不为欲污, 是谓梵志;
|
Being aware that birth is suffering, from this extinguishing the mind, able to lay down the heavy burden, this is called a brahman;
| 觉生为苦, 从是灭意,能下重担,是谓梵志;

Understanding subtle wisdom, discerning the path and what is not the path, embodying the supreme meaning, this is called a brahman;
| 解微妙慧, 辩道不道,体行上义, 是谓梵志;

Abandoning the household life, without the fear of a household, having few desires and few wishes, this is called a brahman;
| 弃捐家居,无家之畏,少求寡欲, 是谓梵志;

Abandoning the killing of living beings, having no mind of harming or robbing, causing no harm or trouble, this is called a brahman;
| 弃放活生, 无贼害心,无所娆恼,是谓梵志;
|
Avoiding disputes and not disputing, being angry but not resentful, treating evil with kindness, this is called a brahman;
| 避争不争, 犯而不愠,恶来善待, 是谓梵志;
|
Abandoning lust, anger, delusion, arrogance, and all evils, like a snake shedding its skin, this is called a brahman;
| 去婬怒痴,憍慢诸恶,如蛇脱皮, 是谓梵志;
|
Cutting off worldly affairs, with no harsh words, examining the eightfold path, this is called a brahman;
| 断绝世事, 口无麤言,八道审谛,是谓梵志;
|
The evil dharmas of the world, whether long or short, large or small, without acceptance or rejection, this is called a brahman;
| 所世恶法, 修短巨细,无取、无舍, 是谓梵志;
|
Purity in this world, no defilement in the next world, without practice or rejection, this is called a brahman;
| 今世行净、后世无秽,无习、无舍, 是谓梵志;
|
Abandoning the body without clinging, not reciting different practices, practicing the cessation of ambrosia, this is called a brahman;
| 弃身无猗, 不诵异行,行甘露灭,是谓梵志;
|
Permanently eliminating both sinful and meritorious practices, without sorrow or defilement, this is called a brahman;
| 于罪与福, 两行永除,无忧、无尘, 是谓梵志;
|
The mind is joyful and free from defilements, like the full moon, slander and criticism are eliminated, this is called a brahman;
| 心喜无垢,如月盛满,谤毁已除, 是谓梵志;
|
Seeing the foolish transmigrating, falling into pits and suffering, wishing to single-handedly cross to the other shore, not liking others' words, only extinguishing and not arising, this is called a brahman;
| 见痴往来, 堕堑受苦,欲单渡岸,不好他语,唯灭不起, 是谓梵志;
|
Having already severed affection and love, leaving home without desires, the love of existence is already exhausted, this is called a brahman;
| 已断恩爱, 离家无欲,爱有已尽,是谓梵志;
|
Departing from the gathering of people, not falling into the gathering of gods, not returning to any gathering, this is called a brahman;
| 离人聚处, 不堕天聚,诸聚不归, 是谓梵志;
|
Abandoning pleasure and non-pleasure, extinguishing the non-warmth and non-heat, being strong and going against the world, this is called a brahman;
| 弃乐无乐,灭无煴燸,健违诸世, 是谓梵志;
|
Having completed what is to be born, dying without going anywhere, being awakened and at ease without relying on anything, this is called a brahman;
| 所生已讫, 死无所趣,觉安无依,是谓梵志;
|
Having already crossed the five paths, not knowing where to fall with the practice exhausted without remainder, this is called a brahman;
| 已度五道, 莫知所堕,习尽无余, 是谓梵志;
|
In the past, in the future, and in the present, there is nothing, no grasping, no abandoning, this is called a brahman;
| 于前、于后,乃中无有,无操、无舍, 是谓梵志;
|
The most valiant and courageous, able to liberate oneself, the awakened mind is unmoving, this is called a brahman;
| 最雄、最勇, 能自解度,觉意不动,是谓梵志;
|
Knowing one's own past lives, having experienced them before, attaining the end of birth, the wisdom of the profound path, illuminating and able to be silent, this is called a brahman;
| 自知宿命, 本所更来,得要生尽, 叡通道玄,明如能默,是谓梵志。
