T 213.33 法集要颂经梵志品第三十三

A brahman is not just one who is
naked, lives in danger, or lies on thorns.

所谓梵志者,  不但在裸形,居险卧荆棘,  而名为梵志。

One who abandons the body without relying on it, does not
recite different teachings, and completely eliminates evil dharmas, is called a brahman.

弃身无依倚,  不诵异法言,恶法而尽除,  是名为梵志。

One who practices purity in this world and has no defiled results in
the next world, and does not cultivate any evil dharmas, is called a brahman.

今世行净因,  后世无秽果,无习诸恶法,  是名为梵志。

If one relies on desire and has no attachment in the mind, having
already abandoned and attained the true, this is called the cessation of suffering.

若倚于爱欲,  心无所贪著,已舍已得正,  是名灭终苦。

Those who have nothing to rely on, always cultivate right
views, and always contemplate the exhaustion of defilements, are called brahmanas.

诸有无所倚,  恒习于正见,常念尽有漏,  是名为梵志。

Fools accept a messy head of hair, as well as bedding and furnishings
harboring greedy and attached thoughts within, what more do they seek in external adornment?

愚者受猥发,  并及床卧具,内怀贪著意,  文饰外何求?

Wearing tattered and evil clothes, personally upholding the practice of good
Dharma, dwelling in seclusion and contemplating oneself, this is called a brahman.

被服弊恶衣,  躬禀善法行,闲居自思惟,  是名为梵志。

Seeing the foolish and ignorant coming and going, falling into pits and suffering
wishing to cross to the other shore alone, not liking the speech of
others, only extinguishing evil and not arousing it, this is called a brahman.

见凡愚往来,  堕堑受苦恼,欲独度彼岸,  不好他言说,惟灭恶不起,  是名为梵志。

Cutting off the flow and already crossing over, without desire like Brahma
Heaven, with wisdom and practice, exhausting the taints, this is called a brahman.

截流而已渡,  无欲如梵天,智行以尽漏,  是名为梵志。

Not by the purity of water do many people bathe, but by
being able to remove bad and evil dharmas, this is called a brahman.

不以水清净,  多有人沐浴,能除弊恶法,  是名为梵志。

Not by shaving to become a śramaṇa, or by calling auspicious to be a brahman
but by being able to extinguish all evil, then one is a person of the Way.

非剃为沙门,  称吉为梵行,若能灭众恶,  是则为道人。

By that non-dual practice, pure and without defilement, cutting off the
bonds and attachments of all desires, this is called a brahman.

彼以不二行,  清净无瑕秽,诸欲断缚著,  是名为梵志。

Renouncing the household life is the practice of a brahman, entering the right
path is a śramaṇa, abandoning all impure practices, this is called leaving the household.

出家为梵行,  入正为沙门,弃舍众秽行,  是则名舍家。

A person without delusion or confusion, without arrogance or doubt, without
greed or the notion of self, this is called a brahman.

人无幻惑意,  无慢无疑惑,无贪无我想,  是名为梵志。

I do not speak of a brahman who is born from parents, for
they have many faults. When they are extinguished, then they are a brahman.

我不说梵志,  托父母生者,彼多众瑕秽,  灭则为梵志。

Body, speech, and mind are pure and without fault, and can
encompass the three kinds of conduct. This is called a brahman.

身口及与意,  清净无过失,能摄三种行,  是名为梵志。

Seeing scolding and seeing striking, silently enduring without anger
with great power of patience, this is called a brahman.

见骂见相击,  默受不生怒,有大忍辱力,  是名为梵志。

If one sees being harmed and deceived, one only thinks of guarding the
precepts and conduct, straightening the body and taming oneself, this is called a brahman.

若见相侵欺,  但念守戒行,端身自调伏,  是名为梵志。

The world speaks of good and evil, long and short, large
and small, without accepting or giving, this is called a brahman.

世所称善恶,  修短及巨细,无取若无与,  是名为梵志。

The body is the basis of good conduct, the mouth and mind should be
without transgression, able to accomplish the three wonderful places, this is called a brahman.

身为善行本,  口意应无犯,能办] cf.【丽】三妙处,  是名为梵志。

Coming does not bring joy, going does not bring sorrow, in the midst of
a crowd one should be distant from the crowd, this is called a brahman.

来不作欢悦,  去亦无忧愁,于聚应远聚,  是名为梵志。

By severing affection and love, leaving home without desire
when desire is already exhausted, this is called a brahman.

以断于恩爱,  离家无爱欲,爱欲若已尽,  是名为梵志。

When there is no self in the other, and no other
in the self, abandoning desire and greed, this is called a brahman.

适彼则无彼,  彼彼适亦无,舍离于贪欲,  是名为梵志。

When there is no self in the other, and no other in the
self, not defiled by the three evil realms, this is called a brahman.

适彼则无彼,  彼彼适则虚,不染三恶处,  是名为梵志。

Able to abandon family affairs, uprooting the roots of desire
without greed, able to be content, this is called a brahman.

能舍于家业,  拔于爱欲本,无贪能知足,  是名为梵志。

Now, having exhausted all knowledge, thoroughly investigating the source of suffering, with
no more mind of desire and love, this is called a brahman.

如今尽所知,  究其苦源际,无复欲爱心,  是名为梵志。

Regarding both sin and merit, both practices should be permanently
eliminated, without sorrow, without defilement, this is called a brahman.

于罪并与福,  两行应永除,无忧无有尘,  是名为梵志。

Regarding both sin and merit, both practices should be permanently eliminated
not attached to the three realms, this is called a brahman.

于罪并与福,  两行应永除,三处无染著,  是名为梵志。

Just like a needle piercing a mustard seed among many flower
petals, not being stained by desire, this is called a brahman.

犹如众华叶,  以针贯芥子,不为欲所染,  是名为梵志。

The mind is joyful, free from defilements, like the full moon
slander and criticism are completely eliminated, this is called a brahman.

心喜无尘垢,  如月盛圆满,谤毁以尽除,  是名为梵志。

Like the clear and bright moon, suspended in the
sky, not stained by desire, this is called a brahman.

如月清明朗,  悬处于虚空,不染于爱欲,  是名为梵志。

Avoiding disputes without disputing, not being angry when offended
treating evil with goodness, this is called a brahman.

避诤而不诤,  犯而不愠怒,恶来以善待,  是名为梵志。

Deeply understanding subtle wisdom, discerning the right and wrong paths
thoroughly understanding the unsurpassed meaning, this is called a brahman.

深解微妙慧,  辩道不正道,体解无上义,  是名为梵志。

All those in the world who beg for their livelihood
without self or attachment, do not lose the practice of
a brahman. Expounding wisdom without limit, this is called a brahman.

诸在世间人,  乞索而自济,无我若无著,  不失梵志行,说智无涯际,  是名为梵志。

If one can abandon desire and love, leave home and renounce all
feelings, and cut off the taints of desire, this is called a brahman.

若能弃欲爱,  去家舍诸受,以断于欲漏,  是名为梵志。

Compassionately caring for sentient beings, causing them not to give rise to fear
not harming those who are beneficial and good, this is called a brahman.

慈愍于有情,  使不生恐惧,不害有益善,  是名为梵志。

Avoiding enmity, there is no enmity, nothing to be harmed
having a mind for perverse views, this is called a brahman.

避怨则无怨,  无所于伤损,志其邪僻见,  是名为梵志。

In the past, present, and future, there is nothing, no
practice, no abandonment of practice, this is called a brahman.

于前及于后,  及中则无有,无操无舍行,  是名为梵志。

Removing lust, anger, delusion, arrogance, and all evil practices, like
a needle piercing a mustard seed, this is called a brahman.

去其婬怒痴,  憍慢诸恶行,针贯于芥子,  是名为梵志。

A city is made strong by its moat, those who come and go suffer
from it. If one wishes to reach the other shore, one should not accept
others' words. Only one who can extinguish and not arise is called a brahman.

城以堑为固,  来往受其苦,欲适度彼岸,  不宜受他语,惟能灭不起,  是名为梵志。

If a person can cut off desires and attachments in this world and
the next, and all attachments should be exhausted, this is called a brahman.

人能断爱欲,  今世及后世,有爱应已尽,  是名为梵志。

Sentient beings have no hope for this world or the next
Because they have nothing to hope for, this is called a brahman.

有情无希望,  今世及后世,以无所希望,  是名为梵志。

One who knows oneself and does not know the gods, humans
and gandharvas, and can know immeasurable contemplation, is called a brahman.

自己识不知,  天人彦达嚩,能知无量观,  是名为梵志。

I take refuge in the most honored among humans, I take refuge in
the best among humans. I do not know, World-Honored One, what kind of
meditation is it? I only pray, Heaven among Heavens, to expound its teachings and precepts.

归命人中尊,  归命人中上,不审今世尊,  为因何等禅?惟愿天中天,  敷演其教戒。

Knowing one's own past lives, one can see the paths of gods and humans, knowing
the end of birth and the source of suffering, the mind of wisdom is eternally extinguished.

自识于宿命,  得见天人道,知生尽苦原,  智心永寂灭。

Knowing one's own mind is liberated, free from desires and unattached
the three insights are already accomplished, this is called a brahman.

自知心解脱,  脱欲无所著,三明已成就,  是名为梵志。

Knowing one's own past lives, knowing the causes and conditions of
sentient beings, the Tathāgata's realization is unattached, this is called a brahman.

自识于宿命,  知有情因缘,如来觉无著,  是名为梵志。

Completely severing all bonds, also not having any vexation
the Tathāgata's realization is unattached, this is called a brahman.

尽断一切结,  亦不有热恼,如来觉无著,  是名为梵志。

The best among sages and dragons, the great sage is
most honored, bathed by countless Buddhas, this is called a brahman.

仙人龙中上,  大仙最为尊,无数佛沐浴,  是名为梵志。

All afflictions exhausted, crossing the stream without taints, transcending
to the other shore, this is called a brahman.

所有烦恼尽,  度流而无漏,从此越彼岸,  是名为梵志。

A bhikṣu's robe in the cemetery, contemplating desire as unreal
sitting under a tree in solitude, this is called a brahman.

苾刍塜间衣,  观于欲非真,坐树空闲处,  是名为梵志。

If a person has no knowledge, no speech or words
the body is cold without warmth, this is called a brahman.

人若无识知,  无语无言说,体冷无温暖,  是名为梵志。

Abandoning the household life, going forth without fear, able
to taste the nectar, this is called a brahman.

弃缘舍居家,  出家无所畏,能服甘露味,  是名为梵志。

Cutting off worldly affairs, speech without harsh words, the eightfold
path is true and real, this is called a brahman.

断绝于世事,  口无麤犷言,八正道审谛,  是名为梵志。

Going far away, wandering alone, hidden without form or shadow, difficult
to subdue, able to tame oneself, this is called a brahman.

远逝独游行,  隐藏无形影,难降能自调,  是名为梵志。

Formless and invisible, this is also invisible. Understanding
this phrase, one has a basis for recollection
Knowing the exhaustion of afflictions, this is called a brahman.

无形不可见,  此亦不可见,解知此句者,  念则有所由,觉知结使尽,  是名为梵志。

Able to cut off the river of birth and death, able to endure and
transcend the world, self-awakened to escape the moat of suffering, this is called a brahman.

能断生死河,  能忍超度世,自觉出苦堑,  是名为梵志。

One should seek to cut off the flow and cross over. A
brahman has no desires. Internally observing all emotions, this is called a brahman.

当求截流度,  梵志无有欲,内自观诸情,  是名为梵志。

One who knows this is truly called a brahman.

能知如是者,  乃名为梵志。

First study to remove one's mother, leading the ruler and
two ministers, conquering all realms, this is called a brahman.

学先去其母,  率君及二臣,尽胜诸境界,  是名为梵志。

Those who know the profound Dharma, regardless of age, carefully
uphold precepts and faith, like the brahman who worships fire,

诸有知深法,  不问老以少,审谛守戒信,  犹祀火梵志,

In one's own Dharma, outside, the brahman is
supreme. All the taints are completely exhausted, without remainder,

于己法在外,  梵志为最上。一切诸有漏,  皆尽皆无余,

Or contemplating the Dharma, all is exhausted, without remainder,

或复观于法,  皆尽皆无余,

Or contemplating the union, all is exhausted, without remainder.

或复观合会,  皆尽皆无余。

Or contemplating the causes and conditions, all is exhausted, without remainder.

或复观因缘,  皆尽皆无余。

Just like the inner teachings, the Brahmins are in the outer teachings
If they share the same bed and bedding, it is like the Pāṭikā.

犹如内法本,  梵志为在表,若使共床褥,  如彼薄俱罗。

Just like the inner teachings, the Brahmins are in the outer teachings
Knowing birth, knowing old age and sickness, and knowing the path of death.

犹如内法本,  梵志为在表,知生知老病,  转知于死径。

The sun shines during the day, the moon shines at night
armor and weapons shine in the army, meditation shines on the
practitioners, the Buddha's appearance shines on the world, able to illuminate all darkness.

日照照于昼,  月照照于夜,甲兵照于军,  禅照于道人,佛出照天下,  能照一切冥。

The Brahmins do not have this, they have worries but no thoughts of
worry, like turning according to one's wishes, they eliminate doubts here and there.

梵志无有是,  有忧无忧念,如如意所转,  彼彼灭狐疑。

Giving rise to various profound teachings, the Brahmins practice and enter meditation
able to resolve the net of doubts, knowing the suffering of the body.

出生诸深法,  梵志习入禅,能解狐疑网,  身知其苦痛。

Giving rise to various profound teachings, the Brahmins practice and
enter meditation, illuminating all worlds, like the sun in the sky.

出生诸深法,  梵志习入禅,徧] cf.【丽】照一切世,  犹日在虚空。

Giving rise to various profound teachings, the Brahmins practice and enter meditation, able to
repel the enemy of Mara, like the Buddha who is free from all defilements.

出生诸深法,  梵志习入禅,能御魔罗敌,  如佛脱众垢。

护心及苾刍  梵志品在末依次品而说,  具足三十二。
