The chapter on weapons teaches the practice of kindness and compassion, without resorting to weapons or harming sentient beings. | 刀杖品者,教习慈仁,无行刀杖贼害众生。 |
All fear death, and none are not afraid of the pain of the staff. Consider yourself as an example, do not kill, do not use the staff.
| 一切皆惧死, 莫不畏杖痛,恕己可为譬, 勿杀勿行杖。
|
Those who can always bring peace to all beings, without inflicting any harm, will not encounter harm in this life, and will be long at ease in the next life.
| 能常安群生, 不加诸楚毒,现世不逢害, 后世长安隐。
|
One should not speak harshly, for words will be feared as retribution. Evil leads to misfortune, and weapons return to the body;
| 不当麤言, 言当畏报,恶往祸来,刀杖归躯;
|
Speaking with goodness is like striking a bell or chime. The body is not subject to discussion, and transcending the world becomes easy.
| 出言以善, 如叩钟磬,身无论议, 度世则易。
|
Those who falsely accuse the innocent with a cane or staff will suffer ten times the calamity, with swift retribution.
| 欧杖良善、妄谗无罪,其殃十倍, 灾迅无赦:

In this life, they will suffer intense pain; their bodies will be maimed and broken; they will naturally suffer from illness and mental confusion;
| 生受酷痛; 形体毁折;自然恼病;失意恍惚;
|
They will be falsely accused by others; they may face difficulties with the county officials; their wealth and property will be exhausted; their relatives and friends will be separated;
| 人所诬咎; 或县官厄;财产耗尽; 亲戚离别;
|
Their homes and possessions will be burned by fire; when they die, they will enter hell. These are the ten consequences.
| 舍宅所有,灾火焚烧;死入地狱。 如是为十。
|
Even if they shave their heads, wear long robes of grass, bathe, and sit on rocks, how can they eliminate their delusions and attachments?
| 虽倮剪发, 长服草衣,沐浴踞石,奈痴结何?
|
They do not cut down, kill, or burn, nor do they seek victory. People love them and wherever they go, there is no resentment.
| 不伐杀烧, 亦不求胜,人爱天下, 所适无怨。
|
In the world, there are those who can know shame and modesty. This is called guiding and advancing, like urging a good horse, like urging a fine horse, advancing on the path can go far.
| 世党有人,能知惭愧,是名诱进, 如策良马、如策善马, 进道能远。
|
People who have faith, precepts, concentration, and diligence, who receive the path and attain wisdom, will then extinguish all suffering.
| 人有信戒,定意精进,受道慧成, 便灭众苦。
|
Self-adornment through cultivating the Dharma, extinguishing harm and receiving pure conduct, not striking sentient beings with a staff - this is the path of a śramaṇa.
| 自严以修法, 灭损受净行,杖不加群生, 是沙门道人。
|
Harmless to the world, one will never be harmed throughout one's life. Always compassionate towards all, who can be an enemy?
| 无害于天下, 终身不遇害,常慈于一切, 孰能与为怨?
