Faji yaosong jing / Udānavarga (T 213)

If you are patient, your enemies will be defeated. If you are arrogant, you will be despised
If you rest your mind, you will be happy. There is no victory or defeat in the mind.

If you disturb others, seeking peace and happiness for
yourself, you will only create enemies and never attain liberation.

If you enjoy sensual pleasures and use weapons to harm living beings
seeking peace for yourself, you will not find happiness in future lives.

If you wish for happiness, do not use weapons to harm living
beings. Seeking happiness for yourself, you will also find happiness in future lives.

Enjoy the Dharma and delight in practicing it. Be careful not to engage in evil
Those who can practice the Dharma well will find happiness in this and future lives.

Those who protect the Dharma and practice it will cultivate the Dharma and receive good rewards
This accords with the teachings of the Dharma. Practicing the Dharma does not lead to evil.

Those who protect the Dharma and practice it are like a canopy covering their form
This accords with the teachings of the Dharma. Practicing the Dharma does not lead to evil.

Evil conduct leads to hell, and rebirth in the evil realms. Unlawful
conduct leads to self-destruction, like grasping a poisonous snake with one's hand.

Neither lawful nor unlawful conduct has the same retribution. Unlawful conduct
leads to hell, while the true Dharma leads to rebirth in heaven.

Giving and fighting are the same in this respect: the wise do not
praise this merit. When giving, one is also fighting. These two things are equal.

When a person encounters hundreds of thousands of changes, they are all equal in eliminating the enemy
of arrogance. At that time, giving with a pure mind is the most excellent among the strong.

Forbearance is superior to the many, and precepts are superior to the many lazy
Those who give with faith and wisdom will receive good rewards in their next life.

The reward of giving with joy is that all one's wishes are fully
accomplished. One quickly attains the first extinction and gradually enters the state of non-action.

If they seek skillful means, the wise and holy give wisdom. Having exhausted
the original source of suffering, one should know that they will receive great rewards.

Loving the Dharma, peaceful and secure, the mind and intention are pure and
clean. The Dharma spoken by the wise and holy is enjoyed by the wise.

If one's mind delights in meditation, it also delights in non-arising. It also
delights in the four foundations of mindfulness, as well as the seven factors
of awakening, and the four bases of supernatural power, and the eightfold noble path.

Delighting in solid food, delighting in wearing the Dharma robes, delighting
in walking meditation, delighting in dwelling in the mountains and forests.

Having attained the abode of peace and bliss, present in the Dharma
without fabrication, having transcended all fears, surpassing the world's defilements and attachments.

Delighting in mindfulness and retention, well observing all dharmas, excellent
indeed, harmless in the world, nurturing the various kinds of beings.

In the world, free from desire and attachment, transcending the mind's defilements and clinging
able to extinguish one's arrogance and pride - this is called the foremost bliss.

The bliss of the aged upholding precepts, the bliss of having faith and
accomplishment, the bliss of discerning the meaning and purport, not creating various evil karma.

In the world, the bliss of having parents, the bliss of harmony in
the assembly, the bliss of being a śramaṇa, the bliss of tranquility and concentration.

The bliss of the appearance of the buddhas, the bliss of being able to receive
the Dharma teachings, the bliss of the harmony of the saṃgha, harmony always brings peace.

The bliss of upholding the precepts completely, the bliss of extensive learning and knowledge
the bliss of seeing the true person, the bliss of the practice of liberation.

The bliss of the pure and cool water of virtue, the joy of gathering the wealth of
the Dharma, the joy of attaining wisdom and insight, the joy of destroying arrogance and having no wrong.

The bliss of seeing the virtuous, the joy of being together with them
the joy of not associating with fools, the joy of being firmly established forever.

Not associating with fools for countless days, living with fools
is difficult, like being with enemies and those one dislikes
Living with the wise is easy, like being with close relatives.

It is very difficult to encounter a wise person, who is never born in vain
If one is born in a place where they are, that family will surely be blessed.

Everyone attains peace and tranquility, the brahmin attains nirvana
not being tainted by desire, completely liberated from all places.

Completely severing inauspicious bonds, subduing inner afflictions, forever ceasing
to sleep, the mind and consciousness become clear and penetrating.

Be careful not to be attached to pleasure, one should follow the practice
of protection, one should contemplate letting go of the world, and observe joyful things.

The pleasures of the world and the pleasures of the heavens
this is called the utmost of love, not even one-sixteenth is attained.

If one wishes to discard the heavy burden, and not create heavy karma again, the heavy
burden is the suffering of the world, being able to discard it is the fastest happiness.

Completely cutting off all desires and lust, and extinguishing all activities, and
extinguishing the root of the five aggregates, no longer accepting the three realms.

The accumulation of meaning brings happiness, friends and food bring happiness, that
extinction is peaceful happiness, spreading to others, suffering takes happiness as its basis.

Like a blazing fire pit, blazing and burning, gradually going out, not knowing where it goes.

Those who see like this are free from the mire of desire, and even when they leave, there is no place to go, attaining the happiness of the immovable.

In the middle, there is no anger, there is change and impermanence, removing sorrow and no worries, peacefully observing the existence of the world.

There is happiness and no affliction, hearing much of the true Dharma, even if one sees harm, people are greedy for form.

Without afflictions, the world is well-lived, the great Dharma knows the source of afflictions, people should understand the flaws of afflictions, people's minds are bound and attached, also bound to the basis of form.

All suffering from humiliation, all happiness from one's own doing
victory and defeat naturally arise, yet there is nothing gained.

Those who wish for happiness and longevity can endure the light retribution, the
patient one is patient with others, the impatient one dwells in all existences.

Those who wish for happiness and longevity are unconfused about afflictions
the confused one is confused about others, I am without confusion.

Those who wish for happiness and longevity, having ended themselves without afflictions, should
eat the food of mindfulness, like the gods of the Radiant Sound Heaven
who always take mindfulness as food, with no burning of the mind and body.

Sentient beings see suffering and happiness, the holy Dharma is indestructible, although
encountering the traces of happiness, without traces, how can there be contact?

Like a bhikṣu in concentration, not attached to any defilements, sentient
beings undergo suffering and happiness, but are unable to perceive it.

Tathāgata, much learning, oneself, extensive, good friend, nirvāṇa, contemplation, karmic hindrances, correspondence, happiness, tenth.
