Dharmapada (T 210) 法句经

T 210.8 言语品法句经第八十有二章

The chapter on language is about how to use reason when speaking, expressing oneself, and discussing.

言语品者,所以戒口,发说、谈论当用道理。

Harsh words and insults, arrogance and contempt for others, giving rise to these actions, only increases hatred.

恶言骂詈,  憍陵蔑人,兴起是行,疾怨滋生;

Humble words and agreeable speech, respecting others, abandoning
attachment and enduring evil, hatred and resentment naturally cease.

Therefore, in speech, one must ensure one's own well-being
and not harm others. This is called skillful speech.

Speech should be agreeable to the mind, and bring joy. It should
not lead to evil intentions. When spoken, it should be acceptable to all.

言使投意可,  亦令得欢喜,不使至恶意,  出言众悉可。

Speaking with sincerity and sweetness, according to the Dharma and without fault, being
truthful, meaningful, and in accordance with the Dharma, this is called approaching the path.

至诚甘露说,  如法而无过,谛如义、如法,  是为近道立。

Speaking in accordance with the Buddha's words brings good fortune and liberation. It
is able to create an endless expanse. This is called the supreme speech.
