Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN4: Connected Discourses with Māra

SN4:8 He Delights

1Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

2v.461 "One who has sons delights in sons,
One with cattle delights in cattle. sn.i.108
Acquisitions truly are a man's delight;
Without acquisitions one does not delight."

The Blessed One:

3v.462 "One who has sons sorrows over sons,
One with cattle sorrows over cattle.
Acquisitions truly are a man's sorrow;
Without acquisitions one does not sorrow."

4Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.

1Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ vihārati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

Na hi so nandati yo nirūpadhī"ti.

3"Socati puttehi puttimā,
Gomā gobhi tatheva socati;
Upadhīhi narassa socanā,
Na hi so socati yo nirūpadhī"ti.

4Atha kho māro pāpimā "jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato"ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
