Thus have I heard:

如是我闻：

Once, the Buddha was at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, a god from the night, with radiance surpassing the usual, came to where the Buddha was. His majestic light shone brightly throughout Jetavana, illuminating everywhere. He then stood to one side and spoke a verse:

一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。尔时，夜中有一天子，光色倍常，来诣佛所，威光显赫，遍于祇洹，悉皆大明，却在一面，而说偈言：

What Dharma should one contemplate? What Dharma should one abandon? What
superior practice should one cultivate? What accomplishment should one attain? What
can one do to cross the swift-flowing stream and be called a bhikṣu?

「当思于何法，　　应弃舍何法，修行何胜事，　　成就何等事，能渡驶流水，　　得名为比丘？」

At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse:

尔时，世尊以偈答言：

One who can sever the five hindrances, abandon the five desires, cultivate
the five faculties with supreme effort, and accomplish the five factors of
the path, can cross the swift-flowing stream and be called a bhikṣu.

「能断于五盖，　　弃舍于五欲，增上修五根，　　成就五分法，能渡驶流水，　　得名为比丘。」

The gods praised in verse:

天赞偈言：

In the past, I have already seen a brāhman enter parinirvāṇa. Disgust and
fear have long been abandoned, and I can cross over the world's attachments.

「往昔已曾见] cf.【丽】，　　婆罗门涅槃，嫌怖久弃舍，　　能度世间爱。」

At that time, this god heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced, and departed.

尔时，此天闻佛所说，欢喜而去。
