Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, a god with an extremely handsome appearance came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and sat to one side. The light from his body illuminated Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park.

At that time, the god spoke a verse to ask the Buddha:

How many dharmas should be eliminated, and how many dharmas should be
abandoned? And again, how many dharmas should be cultivated with superior methods?
How many aggregates should be transcended by the bhikṣu who crosses the swift current?

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse in reply:

Eliminate five, abandon five, and cultivate the five faculties
Transcending the five aggregates, the bhikṣu crosses the deep current.

At that time, the god-son spoke another verse:

Long have I seen the brāhmaṇa attain parinirvāṇa
beyond all fears, forever transcending worldly affection and love.

At that time, the god-son, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and was delighted. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and then disappeared.
